The mental picture we often summon of older family or friends is of them in their own home, and it’s true that older adults spend more time in and around the house. This makes safety in the house all the more important.
Things to make the environment safer inside the home include:
- Have good lighting throughout the home, especially where people move around
- Remove rugs, especially ones with soft or raised edges
- Repair any loose or broken flooring or carpet,
- Safely store or conceal all cords out of the way or against a wall
- Remove all clutter and anything draping over furniture.
- Relocate/remove furniture that restricts walking spaces or adds to clutter
- Make bathrooms safe by having proper rails installed near toilets and showers
- Have a walk-in shower
- Stairs need good rails and good lighting.
Physiotherapists or occupational therapists can do home visits and make recommendations suited to the individual, helping keep them safer and living there for longer.
