What to do if you fall?

By participating in a strength and balance program 3 or more times a week, older people have fewer falls and less chance of sustaining a fracture in the event of a fall. So although we hope it never happens, what would you do if you found yourself on the floor? Only around 1 in 10 falls results in a fracture so it helps to keep calm and follow these simple guidelines:

  • Clear yourself from any hazard that you may have tripped over
  • Get help by calling out or using a device you have with you or can reach. If someone is coming to your assistance, wait for them to arrive before moving.
  • If your fall was caused by dizziness, make sure it has settled sufficiently before you try to stand.
  • Providing you’re not badly injured, first try sitting up.
  • When ready move towards a chair (or other furniture/item that will take your weight when you lean on it).
  • Come up onto your knees and place your hands on the chair.
  • Push down on your hands and feet, lifting yourself onto the chair.
  • Relocate to a safe place when ready
  • Call a friend or family member to let them know what has happened
  • Remove any hazard that caused the fall
  • Make an appointment with your GP if you are injured or fell because of a funny turn, dizziness etc.
